A need for more impactful collective action on climate

While concern about climate change is widespread, many people feel powerless to act. A global move to renewable energy sources is widely regarded as one of the biggest levers the world can pull to stabilize our climate, but the transition is complex.

Despite their key role in combating climate change, small and mid-sized renewable energy projects — especially in rural and underserved communities — often struggle to secure funding, overlooked by traditional investors due to their smaller size and unfamiliarity, yet too large for community lenders.

Alba Forns brings deep expertise in engineering and renewables, underpinned by postgraduate studies in sustainable energy technologies. Prior to impact entrepreneurship, she worked as an energy consultant on renewables projects and policy. In her personal life, she has always been a passionate climate activist, including regularly attending Greta Thunberg’s famed Fridays for Future strikes while studying in Sweden.

However, despite all this expertise, experience and time spent, Alba was feeling disillusioned about her ability to drive real change as an individual. It was this desire to orchestrate truly impactful collective action that led her to create Climatize.

“People care deeply about climate change but often feel powerless. Through our platform, we are making investment in renewable energy accessible to everyone.”

The fintech solution democratizing contributing to the energy transition

Back in 2019, Alba was attending a climate strike with Will Wiseman, a friend who would go on to become her co-founder. Attending alongside 100,000 others, she felt inspired by the dynamism and hopeful spirit of the gathering — but with an underlying note of sadness. She felt unconvinced that strikes and protests would lead to the systemic change so urgently needed.

The pair soon started workshopping ideas to turn this collective energy into real solutions. Alba’s previous experience as an energy consultant specializing in renewables projects had shown her the difficulties such initiatives experienced attracting financial backing. Crowdfunding seemed like an obvious solution. They imagined each of those 100,000 protestors putting in a dollar a day, and how those small investments would soon snowball into impactful sums.

Climatize was initially born as a university project, but it took off quickly. After graduation, Alba began working on the business full-time. Its fintech solution allows everyday individuals to support vetted clean energy projects, including solar, battery storage, electric vehicle charging and heat pumps, by investing as little as $10 USD.

What makes the business unique is how it makes impactful climate action accessible, while also offering the potential for a return on investment. It offers full transparency on the use of investor funds, tracking each project and providing regular updates. Key performance indicators include carbon emissions avoided and capital directed to low-income or disadvantaged communities.

This combination of accessibility, ease and evidence of positive impact is very empowering for its customers, many of whom are new to investing. By offering low minimum deposits and charging platform fees to borrowers, not investors, Climatize removes major barriers to entry.

Its growth trajectory has been rapid, hitting milestones one after another. Alba recalls trepidation listing its first-ever project requiring $500,000 USD of investment, and her delight only 20 days later when the project was fully funded.

Behind the impressive numbers, Climatize is also improving the lives of individuals and families who benefit from the projects it funds. Many people in underserved communities struggle to pay their electricity bills, so funded access to renewable energy that powers their homes for free can be life changing.

“We are on a mission to decarbonize, decentralize and democratize the energy transition. We are building the people’s financial network for climate action.”

The future of funding energy transition infrastructure

Alba’s long-term vision is for Climatize to become a leader in climate finance infrastructure, funding $1 billion USD in renewable energy projects annually and reshaping who benefits from the energy transition. So far, the platform has channeled over $15 million USD into renewable energy projects. To date, more than 3,150 investors have participated, helping avoid an estimated 300,000 metric tons of carbon emissions over the lifetime of funded projects — and successfully turning individual concern into collective, measurable impact.

“When we all put in a little, it turns into a lot. No matter how small your contribution is, if we all do it together it can turn into something massive.”
